Java Edition is the Minecraft that runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux through the official launcher. It is the edition with snapshots, data packs, and the widest modding scene. It does not run on a phone.
Wilderness Bound, the stable game
Java 26.3, released 15 September 2026, is the stable Wilderness Bound update. The headline is a camping trip that the world builds for you and then lets you improve.
- Dappled Forest generates near cold biomes, with poplar trees in three leaf colors.
- Shelf mushrooms sit on the trunks, bone-meal from small to large, and can go in stew.
- Abandoned camps show up in a long list of forests and have chests and barrels.
- Cushions are placed seats. Straw beds are the lighter camp bed.
- Wool and concrete gained stairs and slabs.
- Spectators can use portals.
- Realms can be shared with invite codes.
Why people stay on Java
Servers, redstone habits, and mods. If your friends already have a Java server, Bedrock will not log into it. If you want Fabric or NeoForge mods, this is the edition that loads them. The add-ons page sketches a safe setup.
