A first night in Minecraft that you survive

The first twenty minutes decide whether night one is a story or a respawn screen.

Start a Survival world and resist the urge to admire the view. You need a crafting table, stone tools, something to eat, and a box with a light in it before the sky goes purple.

The first ten minutes

  1. Punch a tree until you have at least eight logs. Turn them into planks.
  2. Craft a crafting table and place it. Make a wooden pickaxe.
  3. Mine stone. Cobblestone becomes a stone pickaxe, a stone axe, and a stone sword.
  4. Kill an animal or collect apples if you are already hungry. Do not rely on rotten flesh.
  5. Make a torch with a stick and coal, or with charcoal from a log cooked in a furnace if you have no coal yet.

The shelter

A hole in a hill with a door is a valid house. So is a 5 by 5 cobble box. Light every block of the floor so nothing spawns in the corner you forgot. A bed is three wool and three planks. Sheep are the honest source of wool. Sleeping skips the night and sets your spawn.

If dark arrives early

Dig three blocks down, seal the top with dirt, and place a torch at your feet. It is undignified and it works.

Tomorrow

  • Mark the house with a pillar so you can see it from a distance.
  • Write the coordinates.
  • Make a shield before you pick a fight with a skeleton. The shield guide is one page.
  • Do not mine straight down, and keep a water bucket once you have iron.
